29 Nov 2014 Centerboard Cup & Regatta: 1030-5pm

Thanks to everyone who made the 2014 Centreboard Cup such a fun day despite the high winds. Well done to Ben Freedman aboard Valeria (L8) for winning the Centreboard Cup as the first boat around the top mark and, more importantly, first boat across the line. We then had Orion (L53) 2nd, Tamatea (L10) 3rd; Komuri (L7) and Melita (L28) DNF. The winner on handicap was Charles, Catherine, Lisa and younger crew on Silver Star.

Honourable mentions include Hawke Sea Scouts who made a valiant effort to battle up against the wind all the way from Westhaven. While the two Hawke boats turned back, the crew on “A” battled on to be the only under-18-footer to make it to Sloanes (and hence the moral winners of the under 18-foot division, even though gear failure meant they chose not to race). It was also great to see so many mullet boats sailing, even if they were not all racing.

We really enjoyed hosting the Richmond Yacht Club Christmas Party as part of our day. A big thanks to Santa Bob and Games-master Mark from Richmond for their contributions (and presents!), and to Nic and Tim for the great Hopetoun Brown post-race music. Nic and Rob also played an invaluable role in organising the day’s events; thanks guys.

1052: Race briefing in 10 minutes at Sloanes Beach… still a bit squally, but we’re definitely racing, starting around 1pm.

9:47 Update: Race Start delayed till 1pm (briefing still at 11am) The watchman patrol boat has been delayed, and so racing will now start around 1pm. The briefing will still be at 11am.

Sat 7:44am update: After a windy night, we have woken to a beautiful still sunny day. Centreboard Cup… here we come!

Yacht Racing, Classic Boats, Childrens Games and a Picnic on Sloanes Beach, Marine Parade, Herne Bay
We had a great regatta last year to celebrate our 100 year celebrations. We will be running our regatta again this year on 29 November, and awarding the Centreboard Cup as part of the mullet boat racing series. We will have a BBQ that you are welcome to use to cook your own food on, so bring a picnic and enjoy the day. We look forward to seeing you on Sloanes Beach for a fun occasion.

We are pleased that The Coffee Guy, John, will again be selling a wide range of coffees from his stall at the top of the Sloanes Beach steps.

The race briefing is at 11am ashore at Sloanes Beach, with the first race scheduled for around midday. There will be children’s games on the beach in the morning from around 1115am. The event will close with a prize giving followed by music on the beach.

Centreboard Cup Courses & Weather
Racing will be organised by the Ponsonby Cruising Club in their Watchman committee boat; we are are very grateful for their support.  The start and finish lines will be between a yellow buoy laid off Sloanes beach and the Watchman patrol boat. There will be two divisions, one for boats 18 feet and longer (which includes the Mullet boats), and a second for smaller boats. The planned courses are shown on the Centreboard Cup map. We expect that the longer boats will start off Sloanes Beach, then go around Watchman Island (leaving it to port), then around the Chelsea Buoy (port), then back to Sloanes Beach and around the yellow buoy (left to port), then Watchman Island (port again), Chelsea Buoy (port again), and then finish. The plan for the smaller boats is to start off Sloanes, go around Watchman Island (leaving it to port), and back to the finish line off Sloanes beach. These courses may change to suit weather conditions; any such changes will be advised at the race briefing. You can check the weather conditions recorded by our weather station (although as of 27/11, the wind direction is not quite right!).

Race Entries
Mullet boats should enter for the race through Ponsonby in the normal way. Other boats big and small should enter on the day; forms will be available from the clubhouse at the beach. We would welcome (but do not require) a $5 race entry donation, with proceeds going to the HBCC.

Program & Maps
The program will be as follows:
1100: Race Briefing and Race Entries on Sloanes Beach
1115: Beach games & rowing races
1200: Race start for boats 18’ and over following the long course
1205: Race start for boats under 18’ following the short course
The race will be followed with a prize giving and music on the beach

Please see the Centreboard Cup chart and map for the planned courses and suggested launching ramps at Westhaven and Birkenhead.
